Elephant Seal Research Group

The Elephant Seal Research Group is an independent organization of researchers dedicated to the study of elephant seals, marine mammals, and marine megafauna at large. We are currently running various long term research projects, including a study of southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) of Sea Lion Island, the main breeding colony of this species in the Falkland Islands, started in 1995, a study of killer whales (Orcinus orca) of the Falkland Islands, started in 2013, a study of the skuas (Stercorarius antarctica antarctica) of the Falkland Islands, started in 2014. We are also carrying out general environmental monitoring at Sea Lion Island in the Falklands. Sea Lion Island is a National Nature Reserve, a RAMSAR convention site, and an Important Bird Area. ELEPHANT SEALS FIGHTING FOR MATES !
Male elephant seals have a simple breeding biology: they struggle to mate with as many females as possible. Their main mating tactic is to get control of a female harem, and mate multiple times with each harem female (which is called polygyny). That usually means fighting against other males.
In October 2022, during elephant seals peak of the breeding season at Sea Lion Island (Falkland Islands), male BAM decided to challenge DOZ, the harem holder of a big harem. DOZ was not very happy about this, he won the fight and kept control of his harem; after the fight he carried out various matings. This is something that males often do. If they take over a harem, or defeat a challenger, they mate with as many females as possible. In the case of challengers taking over a harem, this is probably related to sperm competition, i.e., they try to fertilize females that already copulated with the previous harem holder. In the case of harem holders keeping their harem, this can be a behavioral tactics to re-affirm the control over the harem females.

Cormorant chicks are surely little monster animals ! Constantly hungry they keep begging for food until one of the parents opens its beak ... and this is when they become like little aliens, sticking their head completely into the adult beak, throat and neck ! No wonder the parents often pretend to be sleeping :-)

All mums are ready to defend their "babies" from any danger...no matter how big it is ! And mama ducks are no exemption. Here a female steamer duck in the Falkland Islands shows no hesitation to bite a too curious elephant seal pup approaching her ducklings ! Good job mama ! And sorry for the curious seal ;-)

Female elephant seal giving birth at Sea Lion Island, Falkland Islands. Just after birth mother and pup starts bonding, calling one each other, but soon after they got slightly separated and the pup ends up close to the alpha male of the harem, who gives a small bite. This is the only situation where even with blood in the water the chance of a shark appearing is zero.
If you watch the Malibu Artist channel you’ll see the chance is closer to 100%. Sharks and dolphins follow each other around and sharks will follow some Orcas for one important reason. Orcas tend to specialise in what they eat. This pod specialises in mammals, they will probably leave the sharks alone as they are not their usual prey item. As the Orcas usually won’t eat more than the liver there is a free meal for the sharks.
Is there any dominance display in the natural world more brutal than the elephant seals? I cannot think of any off the top of my head, it's crazy...

Oh because you’re blind! Sorry my friend. Perhaps you should not be staring at a UA-cam screen then. I will fill you in with what the sighted people saw extremely clearly and didn’t need anyone to simply repeat what they could see using their eyes and brain. The Orcas rammed the Elephant seal multiple times, kept it under water multiple times, the younger Orcas came in and helped build their skills in hunting, the leader of the pod came in after the Elephant seal was exhausted and bit right into the chest cavity and ripped out liver and a hunk of whatever came with it. This caused litres of blood to be pumped into the water. Got it?
